(OT)change of plans on the rescue home...

...decided to refit the woodwork for longer panels of similar glass sheets I have a bunch of.. this gives me over 10 feet of glass front with room left over for an IMPORTANT access door LOL. Off to Lowes for the wiring and conduit stuff.

....gotta have a door LOL.

Note: Something mysterious has just happened to Eve's Blue Spot decal....is it connected somehow to the Famous Red Spot of Jupiter? Was it something cooked up by those crop circle guys?

Naw...it took about a half hour to scrape it off LOL.
Hopefully, never again seen in our lifetimes.

You are going to crawling in there on your hands and knees getting crickets out LOL...you know you will! Must be why you put the nice supports along the bottom. Looks very nice though. I wish I could do something similar inside.

PS: Plan now for dividers. You will have more lizards, and wish you had made it easy to split up that space LOL

...my *small door* is 21"x26" LOL. Since I'm almost 6' and 220 lbs, I decided if I make the door just right for someone who was say.... five-foot-three or so, THEY would be the one who had to crawl through it not me. Good Lord, use your brains LOL. Really the door is just for access to the high maintenance stuff like water dishes and similar routine business. For anything serious (like having to chase a savannah down and catch it LOL), its the ladder/step-over technique. You are right about the floor, that's why I made it "running fat boy approved". "Run away, run away!" The story about the savannahs is pretty sad, a guy showed up at the animal clinic where my wife works at closing time, with two of these in a cardboard pet carrier (SMALL) trying to see if someone wanted to buy them for $25. Someone else had dumped them on HIM because they were fading fast and obviously dying. This guy had NO way to care for them and could not afford the set-up to provide these great lizards with anything like a viable enviro. We told him NO money, but we will do everything we can to get them back in shape and properly housed. Really, if we had turned them away at that point, they were dead. We are not really 'monitor people' but very few ARE in our neck of the small-town woods, so the hot potato is ours this time LOL. The larger of the two is about 24" long and the smaller is about 16" and VERY underweight.
We will set them up correctly and see if they can be turned around, and the sooner I can get them to outgrow this enclosure, the sooner I can build them a REAL one that is suitable for BIG lizards and give this one to the collareds LOL. There is madness to my methods, as usual.

Think what you guys are doing is wonderful, very compassionate, your money your time, yourselves, to these 2 guys, Good Luck, and I wish I HAD a great cage like that for some of mine !!!! Eve

eve Aug 07, 2003 09:45 PM

Little flower on the wall, why would Don make a door so small?
A big long cage, and mighty nice, what are ya housing tiny mice?
Those monitors will grow really fast, and a little door will not last. A bigger door is what you need, to get in to clean and to feed. Hey you really are doing great,a nice thing your doing, YOU & YOUR MATE !!! Great cage, good luck with the rescues ! Eve

Oh yea...one more thing. You should post that pic in the cages/terrarium section. You will be amazed at how many hits it will get. Keep a running total on cost too (we won't share it with your wife, don't worry). I didn't keep track at all last time, and wish I had...

Oh well...looks nice, Don. What are you putting in there again?

John Eddington...Breeder of Eastern Collared Lizards: Specializing in Artificial Color and Temperament. This is a joke! LOL

John, I would like to talk about one of those lizards with artificial temperaments. Sounds good. LOL

PS. Do they have artificial flavoring too?

Ha, ha...

....when I posted the picture of that stupid little screen-covered frame I titled "quick sunning enclosure" it got 20 times more hits almost instantly than any lizard picture I ever put up LOL. BTW I should pull that one since it needs an opaque and smooth 'liner' of some kind all the way around the lower portion of the inner 'walls'....though my lizards are very tame, Ghost spazzed the other day while he was out sunning and dinged his snout a tiny bit by running at full speed right into the hardware cloth walls. DOH! I'll modify it if the sun EVER shines here again....
