R. Brev's eye...AGAIN...

trinacliff Aug 07, 2003 04:52 PM

Well, she's been totally fine for a day or so...yesterday I didn't even notice it closed at all. She was fine for most of the day, and now it's partially closed again. Same eye...and she was scratching it again today. UGH...

Guess I should call the vet and make an appointment...

Kristen,

Have you applied any opthalmic antibiotic ointment yet?
I use either Terramyacin ointment or Erythromyacin Opthalmic ointment. Since the brevs are so small, it is almost impossible to use Gentamicin eye drops.

I have had good luck with these ointments.

No, I haven't...I didn't know I could do this. What is the best way of applying it and how much? I would imagine a Q-tip or something? She'll close her eye, right? Do I just leave it and hope it gets in there?

Thanks!!! Oh...are there any brand names that are definitely ok to use?

Take care!

Kristen,

Don't use a q-tip.... too much chance of getting the fibers in the eye. I wash my hands with antibacterial soap then apply a tiny amount to my pinky finger tip. I smooth it over the entire eye turret. You can do this once a day for non-severe problems - or twice daily for worse problems. For a brev - I would use a dab about the size of a pin-head. Gently hold the brev in place (fingers along side of his body) and apply gently.

These all are available from your vet... and Terramycin (otc) is available from a lot of pet shops and even herp supply places on the internet. Usually about $10 per tube. Terramycin is widely used for cat and dog eye irritations too - like allergies.

The others may require the vet to dispense it with a prescrition, so call the vet and ask. Eye ointment should be a staple in your "cham first-aid medicine kit"

Hope this helps,
Morgana
