I believe one of our blue tongues is coming down with a respiratory infection... He sneezed several times and "snot" came out of his nose after a few sneezes. We opened up his mouth and he seemed to have a little extra fluid in there. Not a lot but maybe slightly more than normal. We seperated him and are keeping him warm and dry. Anything else I should do?

If it IS a RI, the next step would usually be a course of antibiotics prescribed by a vet.

Sometimes they get small things in their nasal passages, and the best way of expelling them is to sneeze. Many times this is an infrequent occurrance. If you use wood shavings as a substrate or paper, it could happen more often.

Our skinks used to sneeze regularly - we got rid of the various substrates and it has stopped completely. I rarely hear one sneeze now (we have over 35).

Hopefully, yours was just sneezing from a similar reason.
Good luck,

Morgana

That is what I was hoping for.... Normally I wouldn't quarantine just for a sneeze. But I was concerned because of the amount of mucus that came out of his nose after a few sneezes. He probably sneezed 4 times in a row. Is it normal to have an excess of mucus after a series of sneezes?

I would also take the skink of any bedding for now. You can use paper towel, and turn the heat up a little.

Well, I know that humans get mucus after sneezing... that is why we need tissues. But that doesn't mean the skinks would. I have not looked inside their mouths when they sneezed - but have seen some moisture expelled when sneezing. It seems to clear the nostrils.

How is s/he doing now - after a couple of days?

all blueys make a sneezing sound occasionaly. You will see a lot of mucous and the skink will be quite lethargic if sick.

When in doubt, take to a vet. Dont wait or you may be sorry
