Steve Craig, my rack system...

wisema2297 Nov 24, 2006 10:41 PM

I remember you saying something to me about wanting to build a rack. Here is a pic of mine again. I'm posting this here in case anyone has some other good ideas about home made racks. Send me an email and we can set up a time for some rack building if you like. I've had this one for over a year now and so far so good. No warping or binding yet!!

I build similar racks, as a matter a fact I built a new one this week so the prices are still fresh in my head..

wood $120
heat tape and clip set $60
large wheels $48 (may be overkill)
rubbermaids $100

They are heavy so I put them on wheels so I can move them around easily. I think they look pretty good and they will last forever!

yours looks much better than mine!! I wish I had put wheels on mine as well. You should have seen my lugging it up a set of stairs!!

i was wondering what tubs your using. they appear to be of equal height but of differant widths, which is exactly what i am looking for as far as a new rack design. i have alot of animals that are hitting the 1 year mark and many that will be in need of bigger homes. i am looking to build something similiar, so that i can keep hatchlings that are a little bigger in their current rack and then yearlings as well as adults in their own seperate rack any help would be appreciated.

i use rubbermaids.. just like your using in your rack.. but bigger..

Go to the Rubbermaid website and look under storage...

The ones i use are called: FlatTop they have several sizes.. but i use either two 3 gallon boxes per shelf or one 7 gallon box per shelf..

Well done Ralph. Hey, I'm all for a few lessons in building a good rack. I'll get with you and we can decide sometime when would be a good time. Thanks for the pic.

how think are your shelf pieces? I was going to try and use half inch to make the whole rack out of PVCX.

it works out perfect and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a less-expensive alternative to commercial racks. I have detailed plans for constructing one on my site.
