Like you have already stated, there are pros and cons to each method. Personally, I like the free roaming method because you don't have to move the chameleon from its environment everytime you want to feed them. If you choose this method, however, you need to be sure you do not overfeed as loose insects may nibble on your chameleon when it is sleeping, etc. Cup feeding is also another great way to do it and this way you can easily monitor the food consumption by counting the amount of feeder insects. You can also hinder the escaping of feeder insects into your home because they are a bit more contained. Hope this helps.

I personally found the bowl method as the best because you know the amount fed and that is properly gut loaded when your cham gets it.Chameleons usually learn easily how to deal with the bowl and after a period they take it as a habit, you can use a tall 1.2 gallon paint emulsion container so brown crickets can't get out and the cham flexes it's tongue a bit.Of course other people claim that bowl feeding doesn't work for their chams.Mine does

I primarily use severl cups per enclosure. Little to no stress on the chameleon, and bugs are contained (and bug food can also be put in the cup to keep them gutloaded). But at least once a day I also release a bug or two (usually crickets) on a branch and let them run (unsuccessfully) for their lives.
