asharp_bflat Nov 25, 2006 01:02 AM

I have one female res and she is about 4 in wide. Is a 20 gal. long tank too small? that is what they told me to purchase at the pet store....

a 20 gallon would be too small for a hatchling. A 4 inch long turtle should be in something that is around 100 gallons by now.

a 20 gallon is the absolute min. do u know hte gender of your turtle? most places will tell you a 20 gallon will house one RES, but i have one and they need way more, you could get away with a 40 breeder but a 75 gallon is better.

My tank is not a 20 gallon. It is a 20 Gallong LONG. so it means that it has about the walking space of a 40 gallon. The people at the pet store told me it was plenty of room. I do plan pn upgrading this summer though.

yeah, i know, i got that. IMO it's STILL too small. i have no idea why any1 would put a turtle in a 20 high, water depth shouldn't be more than a foot anyway. no offence, but you shouldnt always listen to what petstores say, unless it's a specialty herp store, they usully don't have a clue what they are talking about. a 20 gallon, as i said b4, will work, but provides no room for your turtle to really streach out it's legs or have fun at all. i hav one turtle and he's in a 75 gallon and i still feel bad he could use more space. they use every inch of space, so it's worth 50 more $ to get it a bigger tank. in comparison it's soooooo much to them. and a 20 gallon doesn't have the same floor space as a 40, it has floor space of a 20 long. there are very few places that sell 40 gallons (i have yet to come across one, but i'm sure ther's some). i've only seen 40 breeder (wider), and a 20 L is definatily not the same floor space, it's at least 3 ft long, 18W. and i beleive a 20L is 28 by 12, so it's a lot bigger.

this is what you said, "and a 20 gallon doesn't have the same floor space as a 40, it has floor space of a 20 long"

I DO have a 20 LONG.

But I still probably will consider getting a new tank this summer, I will find one at a g-sale. Maybe sooner.

i am fully aware what i said, but before i beleive u said a 20L has the floor space of a 40 gallon, so i was just correcting u. didn't mean to be rude.

ohhhhhh....... ok I understand now... thanks for the help.

otis07 Dec 02, 2006 05:35 PM

yeah, i think it was just a misunderstanding, good luck with your RES!

buslady Dec 20, 2006 04:59 PM

actually the 20L has the floor space of a 29 gallon.

otis07 Dec 23, 2006 08:37 PM

yeah, cause 29 are tall tanks, i don't know why any1 would buy a tall tank for a turtle. i never said they didn't have that floor space. i get yoru point hgough.
