roachownsu2 Aug 07, 2003 06:26 PM

i ordered a 2003 baby eastern painted turtle and itcame to day..it was just basking and i went ovcer to look at it and i noticed a bunch of very small bugs running around on his head..i assume there mites of some sort but i didnt think turtles could get mites because i figured when they go in the water the mites would die...if anyone knows excatly what these are or how to get rid of them please let me know..

What are you using for the basking platform? If you are
using some kind of wood and it was not treated first he
probably picked them up from that. Are the bugs tiny and
red?

no i am using a large peice of slate rock as the basking area and no the bugs are very small and a whiteish color...

could be springtails
these are small white are totaly harmless, usually associated with soild or rotting logs.
is there aland area in your enclosure?
did the slate come from outside?
also there are mites that are red and some are black and some are white.
i'd try to rinse them off with running water and see if any seem "stuck" on to the skin of the turtle before you go much further.
