BORNEO BULLETIN (Brunei) 20 November 06 Baby Croc Found In Drain (Rosli Abidin Yahya)
Bandar Seri Begawan: Residents of Kg Bebatik in Kilanas were in for a shock when they found a baby crocodile in a drain near their houses recently.
They said even though they live beside a river where crocodiles have been sighted, the finding of a baby crocodile in a drain showed that the reptiles have managed to find their way into the drains.
"Riverbanks near residential areas should be fenced so children will not play there. Drains leading to the rivers must also be made higher so baby crocodiles cannot climb up," they said. They also expressed their fears for the safety of their children who usually play near the drains.
"Imagine if a bigger crocodile finds its way into the drains. This signals that something must be done to keep our drains free from the reptiles," they said. A few days ago, the baby crocodile was caught by a Thai construction worker who was catching fish from the drain using a net. When the worker showed the baby crocodile to residents in the area, they showed their utmost concern on the finding.
They were about to release the baby crocodile into the nearby river when an expatriate staff wanted to adopt it as a pet.
