Winter heating ???

in2deep Nov 25, 2006 08:55 PM

Since Dozer has decided it must be winter outside, he's only active every few days (only eats about every 4 days or so).
Can I lower his temperatures a bit or shorten the time his lights are on? If so, what's acceptable? Keep in mind this is his idea not mine, as I'm not prepping him for breeding or anything.

Right now the basking spot gets up to about 122F, the hot end is about 100F and the cool end is about 85F. His lights are on for about 12 hours.

As always, thanks for the great insight.

If there are no breeding plans for him, I'd not change anything. Just keep his hours in accordance with regular daylight.

Alright, so I'm planning on leaving the temps where they are at, but gradually shortening his lights from the current 12 hours to maybe 9.5-10 hours.
Thanks.

I don't think you can go wrong with that plan! We've never fully brumated any of our guys & have never suffered a problem that was recognizable. That may be the key word but I really doubt that induced cooling does alot except for the gonads. Even then, some species need it more or less than others.
