lighting for yellow rats

fliptop Nov 25, 2006 09:29 PM

Hey, Ratsnakers,

How many of you use UV lighting for your yellow ratsnakes?

As they are typically found "basking" in the wild, I'm assuming I should set mine up with some sort of lighting, and wanted advice on how it should be done. Any suggestion for caging would be great, also.

BTW, I picked up the WC albino from Dan Scolaro/DTS Reptiles--AWESOME; will post pics as soon as he's settled in.

Thanks!

Pantherophis allegeheniensis bask as a means of thermal regulation. They don't seem to need UV lighting for good health. Find a good care sheet for corn snakes, follow its advice, and your snake should do fine.

I agree with this statement too. My yellows only have the ambient room lighting. My big male is often out prowling when he's hungry, but my female is never, and I mean never, out in the open. I think I've only seen her out once in the the last 2+ years. The babies from this year's clutch are the same and only come out occasionally.

In addition to what the other people who posted said about rat snakes not needing UV light, keep in mind that albino snakes are sensitive to bright light - if you have an undertank heating pad for heating, then room light is all you need.
