Worried about hatchling

churchy1 Aug 07, 2003 06:47 PM

This little one hatched sometime today, all it seems to do is sleep and move around very little. I am not sure if you can see how shiny it is from the pic but it just does not look normal. I have left it in the incubator container thinking to give it some time to adjust but it it just seems to lay there the Vermiculite has been stuck to her since I found her 4 hours ago. Do you think it will be ok.

it seems like she has some yolk stuck to her...i would leave in the incubator for a bit longer and when you do remove her, leave her on paper towels so that all of the moisture/yolk can be absorbed. also, the sleeping is not out of the ordinary for a hatchling

Thanks now that I have had a closer look it seems that she is still attached to her yoak sac, I am going to leave her alone until tomorrow and then take her out of the incubator.

Thanks,

Craig

when they are still stuck to the yolk sac, it WILL eventually fall off but don't be surprised if where it detaches you see a little blood or a little cut, this often happens in these situations...in the event that it does happen just use a little anti-bacterial cream on it and it should heal up fine.

What is the best way to hold a screaming biting hatchling to put anti-bacterial cream on the cut? I have had a hard time moving the other hatchlings around, I usually resort to chasing them into a tipped over container.

Thanks,

Craig

No, seriously it is hard but one thing I find helps is if you enclose the hatchling in both of your hands so it is dark and warm and it feels safe (not applying any pressure, make a little cave of your hands, that traps the gecko but also feels safe). Let the gecko calm down and realize you are not going to hurt it, get used to you. Then it will usually be calmer.
