GTP vs ETB

pythonjim Nov 26, 2006 12:57 PM

I am very interested in purchasing either a GTP or ETB. I keep
colubrids, burms, retics and also jungle carpets. Can someone answer a few novice questions?

Which as a general rule has the more forgiving temperament?
Which is more tolerable of husbandry deficiencies?
and lastly, I am not interested in handling as a rule, only to clean the enclosure, or any other necessities.

Thanks for any advice on which would be the best purchase.

With your experience you should have no trouble being able to meet the husbandry expectations of either species. I personally like the GTP's as they have a more diverse range of colors and personalities. Many are quite tame, and for the basic cbb animal, less expensive. Three of my four are quite easy to handle and one in particular is more tame than even my cornsnakes. One is pure evil! I'm not as familiar with ETB's, but their care is only slightly different from GTP's. Some are more particular than others to husbandry errors. I believe it's the Northern Basin that is more sensitive....someone who has them will be able to tell you more. I would say both are equally sensitive to husbandry errors. They aren't one that you want to make gross errors for long with, but seeing as you've had different types of pythons, you should have no problem. There are plenty of books out there on both species although if you're going with a GTP (my suggestion-you can't beat them for diversity) I would get Greg Maxwell's "The More Complete Chondro" as a good reference book. Good luck in your search! Did I mention that no two are alike????

>>Which as a general rule has the more forgiving temperament?
-They both have there moments.

>>Which is more tolerable of husbandry deficiencies?
-Chondros. Some people keep Emeralds and Basins Cooler than Chondros, but you can keep them at the same temps. You also are going to want to feed Emeralds and Basins less than chondros and smaller meals I belive the rule is 3 meals - defication, for basins and emeralds. Females Basins are also a lot larger than most chondros.

>>Thanks for any advice on which would be the best purchase.
- It depends. They both differ in price from 300 - 30,000 it depends what you're looking for. Female Basins are breath taking to see perched in person, due to their size alone. Chondros come in many colors. Seriously, i think you'll end up getting one of each
