Brumation, hibernation, cooling safety?

Rick Millspaugh Nov 26, 2006 01:42 PM

My ornate is a little over a year now and I’m trying to decide if I should cool him or keep him going through the winter.

All our adult Bearded Dragons have gone under for the winter, we stop feeding them for about a week, give them one last day in the sun and a good soak (so they defecate) give them one more day of warmth them all lights and heat go off. They all have hides and we check them all once a week. Our garage (where they live) rarely gets below 60 even if it is freezing outside.

So, Mr. Yahoo (the Ornate) live next to the B. Dragons do I follow a similar procedure with him or bring him back in the house?

Hey Rick,
I wouldn't brumate if you're not going to breed him. Just my opinion. BTW, your female ornate is almost sure to produce this spring. She's paired up very nicely.

Man I can’t wait to see the babies. She was a fast grower, out pacing all the other babies, almost double the weight of the next one in size (that you also have). Glad she found a male she likes! Still not sure what I’m going to do with the male I kept, if he keeps coloring up he is going to be unbelievable. He has a very mellow personality too. I'll probably pick up a female next year or grow a few babies again (it was kinda fun).

Yeah, she's as large as the 5 yr old male she's paired with. He bred her almost immediately after introducing but nothing became of it. Timing was way off. Her disposition is superb.
I'll try to get some picts next weekend & shoot an e-mail to you.

I know she is less than two years old. Definitely the “alpha” lizard in the group though. I just wish she had gotten along with my male. Maybe an older male was what she needed. These guys are so cool; everyone should have at least one! I can’t wait to see her babies. I’m glad she has a good home too!

That's her bottom right, the male I kept is middle left (their heads are touching). I might have it backwards though, I will need to check the pattern. The little half log they are on is (was) just under 7 inches accross.

Gorgeous Ornate! Yes, I agree with the response above. I do not brumate uros, period until their 2nd year. Too foten yearlings can run into problems relating to kindey dysfunction.
Just for safety aspects. There is some debate as well as to their longevity if not brumated and have heard pros and cons, even if you are not going to breed them. I have had babie uros without brumating too, which caught me off guard, though this is an exception to the captive breeding rule.

Good luck and a terrific ornate once again!!!

That was my first thought too, I just wasn’t sure.

I will move him into the house; I already put a cage up for him. I got a new pic yesterday but haven’t had a chance to download it yet. His blue is coming in very intense.
