Busy LIveS! and how do you deal w/ it?

googo151 Nov 27, 2006 07:05 PM

Hey,
I'm a pretty busy guy (keeper) these days and I just thought I would post and ask around how keepers of bloods and other critters, related of course, deal with traveling for a spell. Travel can include and does often include 2 weeks at a time with no one to look after my herps. Chime in!

I can easily understand the frusteration with your situation!!! I am absolutaly STUCK with my animals (and I say that in the nicest of ways)! As of right now, I have a sulcata tortoise, a blood python, an eastern milksnake, a leopard gecko, two crested geckos, a giant day gecko and 5 different species of poison dart frogs that totals 11 animals plus tadpoles, and a 8 month old dachsund/jack russel mix. My reptiles can go a couple days w/ out care if necessary, but my amphibians need daily care. Thankfully, I have the greatest grandmother in the world that lives acrossed the street from me and suprisingly likes my animals and has been willing to learn to care for them in a pinch. If I get stuck in a pinch though and need to leave for a week or longer, I have a lot of friends in my area (friends from the zoo where I work) that are willing to help out. I moved to South Africa for all of last year and my friends were such a blessing in that situation!!! Maybe ask around at your local vet clinic and see if someone would be willing to help you out by babysitting (for a price I'm sure)... Good luck!

Luke.

Thats one of the hardest things about "pets" they need attention everyday, even hoildays...as for travel'n shoot even if its a 2 day trip, I'll pay one of me frinds to drive out(40miles) and check out the, dogs, snakes, house, ect....The reason I pay'em is to let them know hom much it means to me to have that piece of mind, and enjoi the trip! They(pets) count on us, to be good!
"What if" ......hmmmmm....I could'nt sleep at night!!
Better safe than sorry!!!....C

Angel,

Can't help you with much advice since my problem is I never get out of the house. Having said that, you could ship all your snakes to me. I promise I will take great care of them

Btw, Ninja is doing awesome. He's turning blue as I type and we haven't had a single problem with him. He's a cuddle snake if there ever was such a thing!

I'll post some pictures after he sheds.

Well, I also happen to have fuzzy critters as well as all of my snakes, so if I'm out of town for a week, I have a relative stop in at least a few times to play with/check on the cats, and try to have them check on the snakes' water. I usually leave my dog at a relative's house (darn thing needs to be let out every day).

But my snakes will do ok with me gone for a week without much "checking on" - most of my family dislikes reptiles. I wouldn't want to be gone for more than a week though, because water might dry up or get spilled etc. You should have seen the instruction sheet I left with my brother the last time I was out of town - to check all the cages, how to fill the water if a snake was near the cage door (snake hook 101), etc etc etc... heh. Looked like a zoo checklist.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies! I thought I would get more people chiming in on this query, but gueess not. I have someone that I pay to check on the bloods and gtp's, while I am out of town, but the last time I was out he was sick and didn't get to the house this time. Any how, all of the herps luckily for me, were all in perfect shape since I hadn't done a feeding for several weeks. I think that was the blessing in disguise. Anyhow, thanks for the replies. And Melissa, it is awesome the hear that. I would love to see pictures of him after the shed. His sib, Peanut, has just shed today and looks awesome. I'll post pictures of him later.
