Brumating alterna in Florida

athenabell Nov 27, 2006 07:10 PM

Having moved from Philadelphia to northern Florida last December, my husband and I were in a constant state of transition for most of the winter. We attempted to brumate our snakes, but the temperature fluxations that our snakes endured affected the fertility of our alterna eggs resulting in only one hatchling. The fertility of other species we maintain were not affected. This winter we are planning on using an window air unit (8x10 room) during the day set in the 60s, and letting the unit blow in outside air at night (40-50s during winter). Any advice from alterna breeders in Florida with the possible success of this plan or other options would be welcomed.

I live in Southern Louisiana and have had success using a window AC unit to cool my alterna in the past when I was breeding them. The unit had a thermostat that I set on the lowest setting (60 degrees)and I brumated them for 70- 90 days. I even kept a backup heater on a thermostat set at 45 degrees incase we got any fluke freezes. Worked well and I had good success. However, the temps did routinely get below 60 for part of the brumation. You should be fine.
