Stubborn male breeder... help

NUCCIZ_BOAS Nov 27, 2006 10:40 PM

I have a male that has somewhat done his job. I introduced him to a female 10-14, he started courting on the 16th, for a week straight, seemingly without break. I'm sure I saw copulation on more than a few occasions, but who really knows. He took a weeks rest, and then bred her for another week from Nov 1st-8th. He has not shown any interest in her since. He went into a shed cycle, which I excused him for the lack of interest. He shed, ate a small meal, but still shows no sign of breeding. The female is now going into her pre-ovulation swell, and Im worried about her not having enough sperm in her to get the job done. From previous experiences, my males have bred for 2 months almost non-stop and done quite well. I am worried that this total of 2 weeks wont be enough.

Comments/suggestions?

Try putting in another much smaller, preferably and probable sexually immature male in with them. This has worked for me in the past very well with lazy breeders.

Otherwise, if you have one, put in a freshly shed skin from another mature male. This can pique interest as well in uninterested males.

Good luck,
Mark

Seriously I would try introducing a shed from another male into the cage.

I have an idea though, any opinions are welcome. This stubborn male is a sunglow, so I would really like him to breed. I have another breedable (proven) albino male, I think maybe if I feed him a large meal tonight, he will have to sleep it off for a while. Perhaps soon after he eats, I can put him in the cage with the pair thats supposed to be breeding, and since he's got a meal to sleep away, it'll hold him back from doing the job himself, meanwhile the sunglow male picks up the scent and gets to work. Pros/cons?
