If money was no object...

zookeeper7986 Nov 28, 2006 10:11 AM

So I've noticed that this forum has been in a rut...the same type of questions keep getting asked over and over so I am here to get us out of that and get us thinking creatively...

"If money was no object (wouldn't that be grand)...how would you have your dart frog areas set up? This can include caging, plants, different kinds of frogs, etc... If you could go hog-wild (or frog-wild) with your animals, what would you do?"

Have fun!

Luke.

Well, I have dreamed lately of a Madagascar display tank made from a chest of drawers. I would get a bunch of Madagascarian orchids and mount them around, and a small tree planted in the middle. A waterfall would be nice too, and obviously lights and an automatic misting system. Anyway, I would put golden mantellas and satanic leaf-tail geckos in there.

So I suppose it would be hypocritical to post this message but not reply myself...

I would build a 20x20 room that would be windows on 3 sides. Inside that room, I would have glass going acrossed the front with an access door so that I could go in and take care of the animals (the actual animal area would be about 10x20) but I would have a living South American jungle inside that room. Complete with a waterfall and stream, live plants and moss everywhere including all sorts of bromiliads and aroids and vines and small trees, humididty to the max, and a cd that plays on a constant loop of rainforest sounds. I would have a red footed tortoise, a couple emerald tree boas, some geckos, and frogs to the max! Then I would sit down in my little "keeper" area in my hammock and watch nature do its thing...Ahhh...that would be the life!

Hey--a boy can dream big right?

For darts, I would have a 10' long, 5' tall, and 4'wide glass tank. The front third would be a pond w/ gravel for substrate and about 10 inches deep. It would have some aquatic plants and a school of neon tetras and maybe a small corydoras catfish. This would be against the glass so you can see the fish. Hiding beind a rock or peice of wood would be a fogger. From this, a little stream would lead to a waterfall in the back(essential of course ). The back wall would be cover with cork bark or some wood and would be about 3 feet tall. The last 2 feet would be an area with some cool plants. Going from the bottom front left corner to the top back right corner would be some driftwood. Along this would be some cool lookin' safe mushrooms. The bottom of the tank would be coated with pillow moss. Somewhere in there would be a big flowering bromeliad. And some orchids, aroids, begonias, and ferns, but I dont know what kinds.

I would keep some bumblebee, green and black, blue, and strawberry darts in there. Also some red-eyed tree frogs. And a baby emerald tree boa. I would never mix species from different areas. I would feel unnatural to me. Probably owuldnt work either. Sorry for ranting, but no one ever asked me that and I got all excited.
