wild mushrooms

jack Aug 07, 2003 08:04 PM

My 3 eastern box turtles are loveing all the rain we are having. The best part for them is that there are lots of wild mushrooms all over. Mine see to like the one's that has a thick stem and a light red top and a white under side the best. For some reason the mushrooms with the thin stems they dont seem to like. I was watching one of my girls and she poked her nose into the mushroom, i guess she like what she smelled and she ate it.

Jack,

Where do you reside? You mention the rain and I know that many regions have had big rains this year. I'm curious about the mushroom thing. I know so little about wild mushrooms. Guess if you live in boxie territory, the boxies know what to eat and what not to eat.

I live in NJ and its has rained for like a week straight. ( heavy thunder storms) There are lots of differt kinds of mushrooms out there, and until i stared to collect them i never paid any attention to how many and all the differnt kinds there are. Years ago when i was like 11 years old i found my first easter box turle in the woods and he was eating mushrooms when i found him, so i have first hand knowaladge that they eat them. With the huge crop of mushrooms out there the wild easterbox turles must be getting fat. I suppose the wild turtles have to pack the food away when they can. Last year were we in a drought and everthing was so dry that there were no mushrooms.

In my area, we have had only a handful of days since March that is has not rained. We have had almost 30 inches of rain this year. Convert that to snow and it would be 25 feet, so I'm glad its not winter. My yard has been a swamp all year.
