Why is it...

Burmaboy Nov 28, 2006 02:54 PM

Why is it, all my large boids will hunt for food....will nose their prey....some will even strike at it...
but not eat?
This is all my large boids....red tails...dumerils...burms.
Can it be my temps have cooled for winter?
Anyone have any theories? I know I'm not the only one this has happened to.
Again this is only my large boids...my milk snakes, and balls (there's a joke in there somewhere) continue to eat.
Things are strange when the ball pythons continue to eat in the cooler weather, and the big guys act like they're hungry, and wont eat.

In my findings, it is because the food was not warm enough, or they where stressed. Trying to feed to often caused that. Also, my Emerald Tree will only eat the rat if it was thawed under a red heat light. Its odd, I tried under a heat panel, and no go, others will eat anything. Its all weird. Hhahahaha. See my Ball won't eat now but all my otherones will. My retic has just started what you are saying so I have to wiggle it. Its like he forgot what he was doing. It use to stress me out trying to figure out why, now I just try different things and see what they like, and stick with it.

I know exactly what you mean. I keep trying. But my normally good eaters, while still hunting in their enclosures, wont eat.
I have one burm that will only eat microwaved rats.Yuck!
It's odd...what has worked for me for years no longer works.
I guess it's back to the drawing board.
I'm wondering that while my enclosure temps are in the high 80's low 90's, the ambient temps are only in the 60's. Think they might be sensitive to this and be on a winter fast?

Could be that the ambient temps are to low, but it sounds like you have a wide range, that exceeds what I have. There are some others here who keep them at a consistent temp as well. My burm just got another RI, 2nd year in a row. The first year happened because the thermastate moved right on the heater and the temps dropped way to low for a couple days. My Temps are good, I just think the humidity gets way to high in her cage, when the newpaper gets wet. Could be wrong though. I hope when I move her to the 8ft cage this stops. Keep on keeping on.
