Field guide for country of Georgia?

jmonahan Nov 28, 2006 03:31 PM

Anyone have any idea if there is a field guide for herps that would cover the region of Georgia? Georgia lies just south of Russia, north of Turkey and west, nw of Armenia and Azer. Its on the Black Sea and is considered to be in SW Asia.

Thanks!

Joe

I don't think there is one.
You might be able to get a lot of what you need to know from Arnold's field guide to Europe, since it makes it over to the other side of the Black Sea. It is available at Amazon.

www.amazon.com/Reptiles-Amphibians-Europe-Princeton-Guides/dp/0691114137/sr=8-2/qid=1164769556/ref=sr_1_2/102-8132385-8020118?ie=UTF8&s=books

Another good guide that does cover that area is the Gruber's European snake book Die Schlangen Europas und rund ums Mittelmeer. It covers a fair part of "east Europe" over to the Caspian Sea. It is in German, of course, but still a great book. This book and a German dictionary would help a lot, at least on snakes.

It is available used on Amazon - www.amazon.com/Die-Schlangen-Europas-rund-Mittelmeer/dp/3440057534/sr=8-1/qid=1164769783/ref=sr_1_1/102-8132385-8020118?ie=UTF8&s=books

One note of caution if your going.. The little glasses of water on the tables at resturants.. THEY ARE NOT WATER! but they are good! gotta love a country that gives booze away! There are torts all over the place there ( greek??) and if you realy love reptiles stay away from the markets, it will make you cry. I was there in 97' as a young Marine and I stayed prety much liqured up the whole time. I left the ship with $20 in their money and after a 3 day binge, I came back with $14 left over!
Good luck.
