What can I use these for?

HappyHillbilly Nov 28, 2006 10:27 PM

Hey there!
Most people start out with an animal and then build a cage for it. Since I've been known to be bass-ackward before, I'd like to get some ideas on what kind of animal's cage I can use these things for. Then, if I like the animal that they'd be best suited for, I might get one, after I make the cage.

First is 2 tubs I was given today. They're I.D. (inside demensions) are aprox. 40"L x 18"W x 5 1/2" Deep.

Last is an old china cabinet that I was going to throw away but thought I'd go ahead & see if it could be turned into anything useful. It's demensions are: 39"L x 35"H x 12"W (or, deep).

Thanks for your time!

Have a great day!
Mike

Hmm.. too bad you only have two tubs, those would go well in a nice juvie rack! You could probably still build a two-unit 'short' rack... you can use drawer slides to hang the lip of the tub from rather than building shelves to rest the bottoms on (since the bottoms don't look completely flat). I used a commercially available shelving unit to do something like this but it must've violated some rules and I don't think it's on KS any longer.

And the other display - just take out those shelves and waterproof the inside, and you've got a great arboreal display cage!

I love finding stuff like that.

I didn't think about using the tubs for a rack. That's a possibility. Since they have drain spouts I was thinking more along the line of using one for the bottom of a Dart Frog setup or something else where a lot of humidity or water is required.

I also think they would make a good pool for some type of land & water animal, maybe even a turtle. My juvenile nile would love to have one in its cage but it would outgrow it too fast. Nobody likes building or buying temporary cages.

When I first was told about them I was hoping they'd be big enough to use in my burmese cages that I hope to start on in a month or so but they're too small.

I like the idea of an arboreal display case for the old china cabinet. I don't know if I'll fool with it or not, though. I've got a friend that's got 2 emrald tree boas so I'll check with him & see if he wants it.

Anyone know if the china cabinet is big enough for a chameleon? I'll have to read up on that. I've always liked chameleons and wouldn't mind having one, I think.

Thanks, Lauren!

Have a great day!

Cool, I thought those looked like little sinks. Definitely would be cool for an in-cage pool.

As for a chameleon, I think that cabinet would be big enough but they need a lot of ventilation I think, so you'd have to add some vents on the side/back. Never had a cham myself, just read about them, they look like great display animals though.

I'm gonna hold onto the tubs for awhile and sooner or later I'll get some hair-brained idea to use 'em for.

You're right about ventilation for tha cabinet if its to be for a chameleon, I just read about that last night. I'm gonna take out the sliding glass doors & track for use in a future, bigger, better, cage and pitch the cabinet, itself.

Thanks for your time & input, I greatly appreciate it!

Have a good one!
