Live plants in vivarium

snakelily Nov 28, 2006 11:42 PM

Has anyone ever tried to have a tank in which live plants grow? And what did you use for substrate?

I had a 10 gallon set up with glass lizards in it. It was big gravel on the bottom, potting soil, small bark, dead leaves in layers. The GLs were underground all the time. I tried various small live plants but I just couldn't keep them wet enough without worrying about having the lizards too wet. The plants would just gradually waste away. Maybe if you put the plants in containers with solid bottoms with drainage "built-in" like clay shards or big gravel...

You could put them in pots then switch them out with ohters every week or so. But if you did not they will wither away without natural sunlight.

Good luck!

with wetsren hogs I managed to have some aloe alive for awhile and I bet that a spider plan would be tough enough, but they just like digging too much for a planted tank to be worth it. If you dident just mean planted tanks for hognoses then you should probably ignore me.

Yes, I was thinking in a viv with a hognose. It seems they can injure themselves burrowing and bumping into stuff that doesn't "give." So, I don't know. Have to think about that.
Thanks for everybody's input.

Hm, my tricolor is always undergound (aspen) but my Eastern is always up in a vine. She loves to climb. I never thought she'd be like that...

I should learn to think before posting . Of course I dont have Hogs living in the large terrarium. Sry.

I have tried with live plants and Hogs, gave it up. They kept on digging the plants up, and I got tired of planting them

Bottom the are for Hognose.

Beautiful setup! I love those vines. What do you have living in there? That's one spoiled reptile!

Thanks Mark, for the clarification -- in both posts, lol!

Oh, I also meant to say, great looking terrarium! Lots of snakes would be very, very happy in there.

But say, you have what living in there? A tree boa, do I understand that correctly? Are you serious?

Now I'm really intrigued...

Well, they are lucky to have such a luscious set-up, and, needless to say, you are lucky to have tree boas!

Take care.
