New to Chondros and I need help?

tumbslt Nov 29, 2006 12:32 PM

Basically I'm planning on purchasing a green tree pyton and I'm a bit confused. There are so many different types like Jayapura, or Murauka, and etc. My question is, I'm wanting to spend to spend about 400 for one. What would be the best type, in that type of price range to purchase. I know this is kind of a personal preference call, but I would just like to get some of your personal opinions so I can get a better idea of the best snake I can get for that price range. Like I said I am very excited about finally getting one I just would like to get a better idea of what is out there. I like both the greens and yellows, and the blue and greens, so suggestions on both kinds would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any help you can offer,
Shannon

I'd suggest that you get Greg Maxwell's book "The More Complete Chondro" It can be purchased from his website at www.finegtps.com It lists the different types in there and what is the most common look to each. Biaks tend to be more nippy, although I have a cross that is quite nice. They tend to have more yellow and are usually larger than the mainland types. Sorongs tend to have a nice green with a pretty blue dorsal stripe, Jayapura's can also. They can also be sort of a one tone green. Here's what my Sorong and Jayapura type matured to. My one Biak is still changing so there's no telling how it will look. I've put a picture there for you to see what it looks like right now. For $400 you should be able to get a nice captive born and bred animal, most likely a Biak or some other mainland like a Sorong or Jaya type. Meraukes, Arus and designer types are usually much more as are red neonates. I bought my first two from Troy Frantz at Frantz Herpetological (my Sorong and Jayapura) and they've been terrific animal and came with certificates stating they were cbb. Make sure you don't get an import as they end up costing more in vet bills than they're worth. Anyway...here's the Sorong-Tempest(yellow neonate)

The Jaypura-Whisper(red neonate)

The Biak-Surprise(red neonate)

Thanks for the advice Meg I really do appreciate it. Like I said I'm just trying to get everything else ready before I decide which type to buy. I have had columbian boas and chameleons for about 5 years but I would like to have one of these also. I have been doing a lot of research but I still have a ways to go. Anyways, thanks again for the help I think I have a little bit better of an idea now.

One last question is there much of a difference in neonates colors. It seems like the red colored ones tend to be more expensive than the yellow. Is there really any reason for this, do there colors as adults tend to be more striking than the yellows or is there really any difference. I figured I'd ask now I still need to get a book on them but haven't found one yet. Thanks again,

So far only red neonates have produced high blue animals although Cathy Maynard has a yellow neonate that appears to be morphing directly into a blue animal. We'll see what happens with that one as it gets older. For the most part, that's the reason for the higher price. Red animals vary in coloration between them also. Here's my Jaya type when he was a baby. You can see he's much lighter than the new PNG/Biak cross that I just got.

IMHO, Sorongs are the way to go. Big and girthy, usually well tempered, and nice blues as well. I have Arus, Biaks, and Sorongs and I enjoy the Sorongs the most. Below is a pic of my female Sorong. She has been bred 4 times so far and the male is trying for a fifth tryst as I type this! The Arus called it quits after 3 sessions though I'll try once more just to sure.

Nobody mentioned those.....I have only kept Biaks and now Wamenas...the Biaks where fiesty as all get out...but My little Wamena is sweet as can be..Really most green trees turn green anyway...So locale is not all that important for me...I would HIGHLY suggest getting a USCaptive Born and Bred baby though...My first Green Trees where imported and short lived...Dealing with a USCBB baby is the way to go, makes the whole expereince WAY BETTER. If you keep your eyes open you can find REALLY nice ones for $400... I actually paid less for mine...Reds go threw a different Color change, it is more drastic and fun, and the reds tend to me more popular, where yellows just go from yellow to green....

Great looking dorsal stripe on that one! I'd say any mainland animal has a good chance of being mellow.

They're awesome! Female is 7', male is around 5'. She is the lightest Southern I've ever seen! Ruby red eyes. She had two eyecaps that were barely visible unless seen at exactly the right angle. I think they were refracting her vision as her aim has been off! I soaked her today and got them off - and got tagged for my efforts! She's got a decent temperment but hand shedding - especially around the eyes would make any snake testy!

The male is tame as can be. I'll post some pics soon.
