Live feeding?

Neon Nov 29, 2006 02:19 PM

Okay, who in here feeds live to their snakes, if anyone at all?

The last pink Spleen[my hatchling corn] ate was live at the request of the vet just to get him to eat [[lo' and behold the advice he gave me originally screwed his eating over in the first place e.e]]. And I'm wondering, since I put him in with a pink last night and it had already started decomposing by this morning x.o, should I try and feed him another live again just until he is on a regular eating schedule?
I am currently snowed into my house [[have you seen this crazy weather in the PNW?!]] but since conditions should improve by tomorrow I plan on going to the petstore and restocking crickets and, if need be, picking up a live pink.

So, if any of you feed live, could you possibly reassure me that it's fine? :x

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the feeding situation, as I'm a newbie to corn snakes and my one pet has no problem eating f/t. However, I'm sure that there are several others here who can help you once they find your post.

That being said, I just want to comment on the name of your corn.... XD 'Spleen' cracks me up, mainly since I've developed this odd inside joke/obsession regarding spleens. What motivated you to name him that?

Spleen... heheheh....

Good luck with the feeding problem, too! Wish I could help.

Heh, my mom works for doctors, so I decided to name him after an organ/body part, and so Spleen seemed awesome since it's just an awesome word period xD

place him in a small deli cup overnight with a f/t pinkie and place the cup with lid on back in his cage. This will usualy do the trick. Make sure there are small air holes in the side if the deli cup.

Try as you might, some snakes will only eat live prey. The good news is that since it is a corn snake it will probably switch to f/t eventually.I know alot of people say f/t is the best way to feed and it does have its advantages, but as long as you are careful, live also poses no problems as long as you have a clean reliable source. Right now feeding only pinks is safe as the toothless little guy can cause your snake no harm,if as he grows and he still refuses frozen food just be more careful.watch until your snake constricts and make sure the mouse does not try to bite back.Take the prey out after 20 min or so if he does not eat by then he probably is not going to,though with corns this is rarely a problem. With the amount of snakes i maintain it is quicker and easier for me to feed pre-killed instead of f/t,but i do have a few who want it live and i have been doing so for many years with no problems.

I've tried that several times now :/ If you can name it, I bet I've tried it including braining, scenting, wiggling, and heating. I think he's just food stupid xD
