Antibiotics? Heavy breathing, death

phoerner Nov 29, 2006 06:07 PM

I had a Female Rat with pups on her and one day i noticed she was breathing hard and loosing weight rapidly. What would you rat breeders do in this situation Antibiotics in water or a shot? I think it was due to temp change. What do you think about what caused this. She was in the house for a while then we moved them to the garage and then it got cold out, so I am thinking the change from 73 to 50-60s might have caused this?

Personally I think it was likely a virus. Going fast is often a lose lose situation. Treatable stuff with rats is the slow, chronic naggy stuff.
As for treatment I never just treat the water as sick animals often don't drink enough to help. I would syringe (needleless) meds into their mouth's on the rare occasion I need to treat anyone....usually someone new that is stressed. Usually a vet would give you oral meds anyway.
