Red sore neck

steffke Aug 07, 2003 08:45 PM

My 21 year old Bell Hingedback has been shedding unevenly about the neck. It seems tender and sore. Has anyone seen anything like this in their torts? There is no evidence of mites or other parasites. Her appetite hasn't been that great, but she always eats a little banana that I add vitamin A to it. I put mineral oil on it this evening. Any suggestions please.

Too much Vitamin A will cause this exact thing. I was
feeding my turts a treat high in Vit A and his skin began
shedding profusely. I stopped giving him the treat and
it cleared up. Stop giving the Vit A and use a little
triple antibiotic ointment on it. You can get this from
any pharmacy or Walmart over the counter.

If it doesn't clear up a vet visit is in order

Good luck!

Too much vit A in people will make your hair fall out.

Thanks so much. I ended up taking her to the vet anyway. She said the same thing. I am glad to know because I have had her the longest out of all of my animals. She also has a secondary infection so I am applying silver nitrate every other day. Can you reccomend a good tortoise news group?
