You know. Most of the ratsnakes I've had have fasted randomly, oftentimes for months. I had a 6.5 foot black rat that basically ate about 4 months out of the year. From about early August, to being brought up from hibernation in March he would eat nothing. He would eat maybe twice, then fast through most of breeding season, and start back around May. I used to worry more when a ratsnake wouldn't eat, but that's just the way a lot of them are. Take care. Glad your snake is eating.
Alan,
Wow. I knew rat snakes were known to go off eating but didn't realize for how long. I was a little worried because this is the first time she's done that. I think part of the problem was she was offered rats instead of mice which she prefers. Anyway thanks for the info it was very much appreciated.
Most of my larger/older N. Am. Rats fast during the shorter days. Some will take smaller meals, less often. I've gotten to the point where I don't even worry about it any more. Either I brumate them, or I don't. I figure I save a few bucks on food, and they're no worse for it. Besides, most of us "try" to feed our snakes much more than they really need anyway. Duffy
That's pretty much been my experience. Also I agree on most of us trying to feed our charges more than they need. The large male black I mentioned in my origional post showed no real fluctuation in weight.
I have one adult female black that will only take mice. The rest of my adults will take mice and rats.
