Bullfrog heart attack??

medis Nov 30, 2006 08:32 PM

I think my bullfrog just died. Hopefully not, but it doesn't look like he's breathing anymore and I don't know what to do except keep him warm until I know for sure.

His name is Boss Nass and I've had him for about 6 months now, and he's about the size of my palm.

I came into my room today and he was sitting there in his water just fine. I turned on his light, and reached in there to fix some of his plants that he knocked over. He of course started jumping around, and tried to dive down in his 2 inches of water. As soon as he did this, his whole body shuddered and he went rigid as a board. He feet sticking out straight behind him, and his eyes closed "into his head". I picked him up to like, keep him from drowning, and he twitched a couple times. I put him on rock under a warm light, and eventually he stopped being rigid. I saw little parts of his body moving, like a toe, then I saw him breath a little. But now he's been COMPLETELY limp for about 15 minutes, and... yeah.

Any quick advice?
Or maybe can somebody please tell me what the heck just happened??

While the frog could have died, I suspect that you have not been supplementing the frog correctly as these symptoms are common in frogs that have been improperly supplemented.

If there is something that is disrupting the calcium metabolism of the frog (either through improper ratios of Ca:P, vitamin A:D3 or lack of supplementation) then the lack of calcium will result in seizures and/or tremors in the frog. The frog will remain in that state until the Ca that was transported out of the cells during the rapid muscle contractions is returned to the cells.

he could have gone into shock, i would just leave him in his tank on the land part. i have a bullfrog and he is a spaz too, just make sure you don't scare them too much. they do calm down as they get older though. keep me posted!
