V, tristis habits...Frank?

Varanids_Rock Nov 30, 2006 10:11 PM

How have you found the habits of black heads to be? Are they highly arboreal, or are they terrestrial? Do they burrow as much as ackies, or none at all? Are they usually pretty shy and reclusive, or are they outgoing like most ackies?

I just saw the hatchlings on the classefieds for the excellent price and was interested. I have been wanting to add another monitor or a pair of dwarfs, and these seem to fit what I am looking for, even though they aren't all that pretty. I would like some storrs better, but haven't seen any available for a while.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi, Black tristis are normally tree dwellers, Freckleds, rock dwellers. But they do indeed cross over.

In captivity, you can keep them exactly like ackies. I say this because in nature, ackies also climb. I have found them up in both rocks and trees, up to about 15 ft. of course tristis of both types go much higher.

another little story, once I was climbing a cliff face, outside of Wyndam WA. and a ledge rock I was standing on, gave way. I grabbed a branch and hung there. As I looked down, I saw an ackie was under that ledge rock. of course I could not grab it, I was just hanging there, hahahahahaha.

Yes, I saw the add, they appear to be very nice black tristis. Good luck if you get them. Oh, yes, they are normally much more shy then ackies. But I really enjoyed keeping and breeding them. Cheers

Thanks. Just reading that story made my hands all sweaty. I guess I have a fear of heights, well unless there is some kind of safety equipment...

Anyway, so you find them to be pretty shy? Are they quite as shy as timors, or just as shy as many female ackies? If it is the latter, I can probably deal with it. I don't think that I could deal with an empty cage. I will probably end up getting a pair of them. Unless you know of a place where I can find some storrs? I think I would like some of those more.

Thanks,
Ryan

They are not an empty cage monitor. They get over being shy once they put on a little size.

About female ackies, I do not see them being shy at all. Cheers

That's good. What size do you usually find them to grow to, in the wild and in captivity?

I think that the only reason mine is shy is because they haven't been eating well lately (I think due to dehydration). I think I have remedied the problem by changing them back to a better substrate for holding moisture, a peat/sand mix. It's what I had them on when they were younger, and they ate voraciously. Now that I have changed it, overnight they began to eat crickets like they used to. Now that it has changed again, I should be able to tempt the animal out of hiding again with food.

Do you have anything about a source for some storrs?

Thanks,
Ryan

Tristis males can reach 3 1/2 feet in nature and I raised a few to near three feet in captivity.

There are two people who attend this forum daily, that are breeding storrs very well. Cheers

Thanks again. I guess I will just post a new thread about that.
