Simple Question. Someone who has done it

phoerner Dec 01, 2006 10:04 PM

Can you have Rats and Mice in the same room for breeding. Seperate racks of course but the racks in the same room. I have seen pictures of them together but want some feedback from the pro's out there..
Thanks Phil

You can keep them in the same room, but your breeding response will not be as good. This is because naturally rats will eat mice an the mice can smell them. They will be nervous and have a higher cannablism rate. Also the rats will smell the mice and have the potential to be more aggressive. That is the short answer. You can do it, but you will get better results by keeping them in separate rooms where they are unaware of each others presence.
Best,
Jason

I did not say that you couldn't do it. I just said the respose will not be as good. Mice and rats can get stressed out like anything else. If you only have one or two cages of mice I doubt you will see and impact, but when you have entire rooms devoted to breeding and hundreds of animals you will notice the difference.
