Tail Dancing?

PoohBear03031 Aug 07, 2003 09:45 PM

I have seen my adult male waving his tail ( I call it tail dancing), and I know that it is common in mating rituals. A couple of days ago, I noticed Boo doing it. I don't think she ( I don't know what sex the babies are yet, but I am hoping they are boy and girl.) is old enough to mate, and she wasn't looking at Popeye. She was actually looking at her reflection at one point though. I am just wondering if anyone else has seen this in their geckos, and if anyone knows why she would be doing it. Boo started doing it after a storm we had knocked the power out, she was freaked out for days. She hid underneath he log for two days, until we finally moved it. I was really worried, but she seem to be fine now. She is eating like a pig, and back to her old habits. Eating, sleeping, and trying to find a way to escape. Which she nearly did the other night, she ran up my arm and I had to have my fiance help me get her back in the cage. She is such a little brat! If anyone can offer any help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I guess it could be for mating but i don't think this is your case. Mine wave their tales really fast when they are looking or chasing food. It's really funny to watch.... Katie

I agree with Katie i think that your geckos are just practicing the hunt. My gecko used to wiggle his/her tail before (s)he pounced on his/her cricket. That was before my gecko lost its tail. I've heard that this is only a habit of younger geckos so enjoy the quirk while you can.

Well, my gecko started to do it a few months ago, he is now 1.5 years old (or more). And he was doing it when he was hunting, kinda in the shape of an "S", he also does the little rattler impression, trying to attract a cricket I guess. (could the S be used to try to pretend to be a snake? and scare away stuff? doubt it....)

My four year old leo still does when startled but has never done it while eating. She usually does it if I mist her humid hide when she is in it.

I believe the S shape is a defensive/powering up movement. It gears the muscles for fast movement... My Savannah Monitor will do it sometimes too, though more in a defensive mode than hunting mode. All my leo's do the tail vibrating thing... They have since I got them. Its cute to watch. My adult female especially does it...
