Brumation question

mycklb Dec 02, 2006 12:12 PM

I have adult benti, Egyptian, ornate, and Saharan uros that I plan to breed in the spring and plan to brumate them. I propose to put them in an insulated enclosure outside under controlled temperatures for a constant 60 degree with no light for a couple of months then bring them out. Is this OK? Do they need a warmer day temperature?

Thanks for any advise.

You should have them exposed to at least UV light at a reduced light cycle. This is what lets them know there is a season going by. Also allowing them coming out an basking under a spot light of 75-80 degrees won't hurt once and awhile. This also allows you to observe how they are progressing through the season. Check out Deer Fern Farms for some good breeding tips.

They need the photoperiod for at least a few hours a day to keep their stomachs from freezing up. I agree, deer fern farms care sheet gives a pretty good rundown of brumation.
