Yes, they need to ovulate to become gravid. I believe, (and may well be wrong) that ovulation is the act of moving the ovum to the fertalization chamber (so to speak). After which the fertalized ovum will spread through out the body for gestation.

Timing is a harder one to pin point IMO, cuz i have read reports of Boa retaining sperm. I know of one such case where a boa bacame gravid after 23 months of not being with a male.
Whether or not she can become gravid after ovulation in the same season, I do not know.

Hope that helps some.

If the eggs dont drop there wont be any to fertilize,so the latter applies.

Here's my understanding -

When initially the male is put with a female, his courting behavior can STIMULATE her to ovulate. They may mate before ovulation happens, but sometimes a female can ovulate without a male even being around. I think the male needs to be left with the female for at least a few weeks after ovulation to make sure enough sperm gets deposited/retained.

But it is difficult to tell if the order matters! It depends a lot on the female, and the situation, and how much sperm has been deposited.

Welcome to the confusing world of boa breeding! When I tell friends/relatives that I'm trying to breed my snakes, they ask a few questions, but usually they end up more confused than before they asked! Heh.
