Egyptians: Microlepis vs Aegyptica

peanutbuttermdc Aug 07, 2003 10:12 PM

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it makes any difference if you breed a microlepis with an aegyptica. I have a 17 inch female microlepis (Isabelle, who is very cute, friendly, and extremely pudgy) and I wouldn't mind attempting the search of a male egyptian for her. I don't really care to breed right now (maybe a few years down the road), but I was wondering if I did, would there be problems if I could only find a male aegyptica subspecies? Maybe Lindsay Pike knows? Or artgecko? You two definitely have the most egyptians of anyone I have heard of. Thanks! Marcie

Hello-
First of all I am not in the same class of expertise as Lindsay Pike,Doug Dix, or John Castellanos.
These guys have a tremendous amout of knowldege and experience in all avenues of Uromastyx.
That aside, I do have alot of Egyptians, so my reading and research has been somewhat narrowed.
So, in my best assesment, I would say that the two are so close in those factors that separate them that they are probably able to cross breed. Most literature seems to state that the two were just thought to be the same-just with different physical characteristics based upon regional location. I have 5 which all seem to have differing physical coloration, inconsistent spiny tubercles on the side, head shape, and behavior.
I am curious. How do you know you have a Microlepis?
Also, how do you know you have a female?
I believe I have 4 males and 1 female Egyptian.

My Zoo:
5 Egyptians
1 Morrocan
1 Ornate
1 Hardwicki
1 Florida Kingsnake
3 Cats

P.S. that's alot of greens to feed......

You definitely had me thinking when you asked me why I think Isabelle is a female. My first thought was because the pet store that I bought Isabelle from told me. lol The pet store was selling her for someone else and not of their own business. They had Isabelle there for seven months, and she arrived to me in amazing health, as the pet store is very small and very caring of their animals. So after I saw your post, I decided to go look at her. She has very small femoral pores, almost invisible actually. I have read somewhere however, that males can also have very small pores. So honestly, I don't know so much now! I think she is microlepis because she has a very yellow nose/mouth and her neck is also yellow. She also has very large scales it seems.

That was an old picture of Isabelle the day I got her. She is much plumper now (by about 100g) and the picture is so bright that you can't really see her coloring. She is chubby little girl (big tummy) at 515 grams now.

I think it is really hard to determine sex by femoral pores.
I noticed that all mine have small pores until springtime,
then there is a noticible difference in the suspected males(waxy buildup).
I would try to detect post cloaca bulges.
As far as Microlepis goes...From the picture-She looks like a microlepis(debatable) that I had. If you look in Randall Grey's new book there is an image of a Microlepis that does not match anything I have seen. There is also some determination that Microlepis has some mottling/netting marking. Does yours have any mottling?
Yellow?-John Castellanos had some pictures that indicated that Microlepis are more yellow.
It is really hard to determine........
Maybe you can help me with this one....
I have a 17 inch(suspected female) that has all of a sudden become really realy aggressive. Charges, Hissing, actually bit me twice, really has me at a loss. Do not know what has changed her demeanor.
This is a picture of her

Do you think that maybe she's become moody because she's feeling ill? A lot of animals change their behavior dramatically if they are suffering from something. Could anything of that nature be possible?

I have not seen any symptoms.
The heat has been up here lately....Could be that.
Her apetite is always good.
she just finished a shed. I really do not know what to make of it. I may bring her in to the vet in a few weeks if there is no change. Thanks for the suggestion.
