Color of a beardies mouth...

veronicag Aug 07, 2003 10:13 PM

Ok - I know this is a strange question ... but has anyone ever seen the upper side of the inside of a beardies mouth? I'm talking about the top inside like between where the nostrils are... One of the beardies I rescued a while back has been acting funny and the vet can't figure it out. He isn't eating well, but isn't losing hardly any weight. I have to keep him hydrated since he won't eat his greens.

Anyways, Ojay was gaping his mouth open under the basking light and I got a good view of his mouth. Everything looked all pink and normal except for the top of his mouth between the nostrils. Maybe this is normal, but is was a bright pink almost red color. It just looked a little odd. But their entire mouth is a bit odd...

Thanks for any help.

The red spot really stands out. I wonder what it could be and if it's normal. Anyone have any ideas?

Beautiful Dragons

I dunno, I've never seen anything like it on mine..
Certainly could explain why he's not eating well. Looks like some sort of sore, abcess..something. Poor baby, sure is a beauty.

Thanks so much Christy. Yeah, it looks a little weird. He had mouth rot last year and I think it just never went away completely. He's hasn't been the same since. Poor baby. He's my sweetest most gentle dragon and I hate to think that he's been in pain this long. I've done a little research and according to Melissa Kaplan if the upper plate of the mouth is abcessed and inflammed, it's most likely mouth rot. Now I need to find out what is causing it. That's the hard part. Looks like Ojay's going to the vet tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again,
Veronica

So, if that's mouth rot, I know what it looks like now. Owie, I bet it's sore..
Sorry your sweetie boy has to teach us at his expense.

That little button like thing on the roof of the mouth is normal. Mine has the same thing. However the roof of your dragon is alot paler than mine but it could just be the picture. The roof of my dragon's mouth has always been a bit yellowish in colour with the rest of the mouth the typical pink. From descriptions of mouth rot I have read before it looks something like cottage cheese.

That looks very much like what an candida yeast infection can do, the tissue under the nasal passage is different and more sensitive than the rest of the mouth or throat and IF that is what it is, the dragon is also going to have it in the stomach and intestines.

Some symptoms are darkening of the nasal passage, loss of appetite, loose stools, white appearing in other areas of the mouth, mouthrot, stomactitis, and or bloating. They can have all these symptoms or maybe only one and it will flare up in cycles if left untreated. Seem to go away and then come back with the smae symptoms or different ones than they last time.

A culture would tell you if that is what it is, painless for them, just swap the mouth where the nasal passages meet.

His mouth is just red under the nasal passages. He has had a great loss of appetite for all greens, and even his favorite fruits and veggies for a long time. He used to be my best eater. I've tried everything to boost his appetite with no luck. Occasionally he will eat some supers or crickets. I keep him well hydrated and will be taking him to the vet tomorrow for a culture to be taken.

He had mouth rot about a year ago. He was treated with Baytril but I didn't give any probiotics because I didn't know about them at that time. He was also treated twice last year with Albon for coccidia and once with Pyrantal for pinworms.

Thanks everyone for helping me with this.
