Cages (Multi-Forum Post)

Would it be possible to make a cage out of acrylic? Would a heat pad melt it? I've been trying to find information online, but I can't seem to find anything about fumes or melting heat. If anyone has news, i'd appreciate it. Acrylic would be easier to make a cage out of, lighter, and sturdier.

Yes, you can make cages from acrylic and many people do. The heat from panels or flexwatt will not melt it providing it is an appropriate thickness and quality, and you are using a thermostat. Acrylic does have a tendency to warp, how much depends on the temps and thickness of the sheet. Haven't seen too many acrylic setups for corns but there are several cage manufacturers using acrylic for arboreal caging.

Jeff Ronne (www.boaphileplastics.com) has been making cages out of polyethylene that some of my friends really like. Vision cages (www.visionproducts.us) are made from the same material and are considered some of the best cages on the market. In addition to being lightweight, they're stackable.

you could try screwing it to 1x2 wood strips. Drill the holes first just be carefull not to crack it. If you keep the strips on the outside then you could stack another on top(if front opening) and the space between could be used to run heat tape.
