In response to bobngale's question below, I really believe chucks are much happier when in a group ( M/F/F). I have no personal experience with observing chucks in habitat ( yet!!!)but have seen quite a lot of what I would say is "Normal" behavior here in my Big Ol Lizard Pen. For starters, I bought me a big ol Nevada male at a local Petsmart in '98 and kept him in a 55 gal tank with a couple Clown Agamas. By spring of '99 I had finished my pen and put Charles ( original name ain't it!!) in there to me the King. I thought he was a real dud as he did not perch up & look "Regal" like I thought he would. I had always planned on getting him some girlfriends ( from Steve Ferrand in Nev) but it took a little while. Finally the day came where the girls arrive--- I set them down in the pen close to Charles the Lapchuck and shazzzaaam!!!! Love at first sight. One gal took for the rocks and hid for the next 3 years. But the other caught Charles eye ( amoung other parts )and he went to showing off & head bobbing and chasing her around & well -- other stuff too ! Point is that it was the girls that brought him to life. He was also a good Father figure and at times there would be a whole herd of babies all piled up on top of him as he was basking ( that was the result of the "other stuff" I mentioned). Now once the babies were a little over a year old, the young males had to go. He also did NOT like to be around any other males. He fit in here in the north side of Houston pretty good-- It was clear he was NOT from San Francisco! Heter-O all the way ( get the hint EVE!!!!! LOL).
To sum it up-- A lone Chuck is not a happy chuck in my opinion!
But they need PLENTY of room too!! See pic of the Big Ol Pen!
