Hi Andrew,

Like you, I am fairly new to keeping Russians. I would advise you to bring him in since he is new, and you are not 100% sure he is healthy enough to survive hibernation. I was going to artificially hibernate my pair like my snakes for breeding in the spring/summer, but everything I read and heard indicates not to unless I am ABSOLUTELY sure they can survive it. Maybe next year if I am more confident about their weight and health. I only plan to house mine outdoors when temps are between 70 and 90 degrees. Its too hot for them here in summer when temps get into high 90s with lots of rain in Louisiana. At least four to six months of natural sun should help with the rest of the time spent indoors.

My boy isn't exactly hibernating..he comes out during the day and eats. I'll bring him in anyway, thanks.

Once again, I am in a similar situation. Not sure what happens if they repeatedly cool down then heat up. I am worried they will start getting lethargic and not want to eat even when temps go back up for a while. Still much to learn and a lot of the temp/health/humidity stuff is driving me crazy. Its to the point I dont want to house my russians outdoors at all!!! Chosing a tortoise that best suits the climate you live in seems to be key in successful outdoor keeping. I should be keeping redfoots, yellowfoots, or hingebacks. They like the heat and humidity. It appears I would have to keep them indoors much less than I have to with the russians.
