Ball Python hasn't eaten in months

luvherps Dec 04, 2006 10:11 AM

She won't take rats or mice. I'm keeping her in a sterilite container thats the long one that goes under the bed, 2 clay flower pot bottom hides, newspaper as bedding, acurite digital thermometer, temps are normal, humidity normal. This has been going on for several months, I didn't think anything of it because I know this is normal for ball pythons to do this. But she is very skinny now and still won't eat, live or dead. I was wondering if I took her to the vet, what treatment could they possibly do? She will not eat. It would have to be in injection if she has parasites? I don't want to waste my money if theres nothing they can do. Should I just wait until next year? I guess she'll start eating then. I tried dangling the mouse/rat, tried leaving it in her enclosure overnight, tried rubbing the mouse on the rat, all that stuff. What kind of tests/treatment can I expect from the vet and how much money?

How large is your snake and what are the actual temps?

Around 5 an a half feet - adult. Don't know her actual age. Temps are 95 warm - 83 cool, sometimes down to 80, then the temps go back up.

Take her to a reptile vet immediately! have you tried braining and all the grosser feeding methods? Take her to a vet first because you need to make sure she isn't sick or filled with parasites. Ask the vet if they can teach you how to force feed, because you may need to do it for her for awhile if she is really bad. they may have you feed a liquid diet for a little bit depending on how bad she gets.
How long have you had her for? did you buy her from someone? If so, what were they feeding?

more info is needed, but don't worry about it now, just take her or a stool sample to the vets. You probably won't get a good stool sample if she hasn't eaten for too long, so you should probably just call and make an appointment to bring her in.
good luck!
