daveb Dec 04, 2006 10:18 AM

...brumation offically started last week in central new york!

...i have made hotel reservations for the 2007 Daytona expo. Is anyone ahead of me on that one?

...brooksi phase of floridana (BPOF) are still one of the best projects to be in regardless of market price. Think of it this way- prices are still better than many corn morphs (subject to change due to market forces).

...eastern kings have made a comeback in the hobby -story tonight at eleven.

...next week our investigative reporters seek out missing forum members.

and the big story tonight: people kill zillions of wildlife every year.

Man those are some Beautiful Goins Kings. Are they all yours ? I like the one that looks more white or cream colored. Seems you mainly see the tannish ones.

Those are all mine, or were over the years. They are my favorites for some crazy reason...
I will be cursed by both sides of the aisle on this, but my intention is to line breed the patternless in something of an attempt to keep “pure” the “Means” or Goini or whatever (I believe the patternless trait is the only one that is not an intergrade) and also separately cross them with the Ghost Brooks to produce the whitest patternless. So on one hand I’m into maintaining and refining a line of so-called “pure”, and also producing a mutt to satisfy my urge to produce something new and a bit unique. See, sometimes you can do both. That’s the plan, anyway...

By the way, obviously the patternless trait is an oddity because it will occur from blotched adults along with blotched siblings and seems to be sex linked (or whatever the term) to occur mostly in males. I personally believe that is because the patternless is a relic of the pure type that basically no longer exists in the wild due to natural intergrades. It still pops up, so I believe there is enough there to refine and “save” (or perhaps recreate) the true Goini that I believe is basically extinct. I believe that when the type breeds true, with equal males and females, the recreation of the lost true patternless kingsnake will be at hand. I do believe you can selectively “breed out” the intergrade genes eventually. Boy, doesn’t this combine a bunch of thread topics all into one!

I dont believe a apalachicola king has to be pattarnless to be pure..Most Snakes around the ANF are blotches or semi blotched. Either way they both are awesome and goregous snakes !

Upscale Dec 05, 2006 11:10 PM

It is just my own theory that the “Blotched” king is just as you describe- locality from ANF that is the classic look. Sure those can be “pure” as in collected in ANF. I just believe there use to be a solid patternless kingsnake that occurred there before that blotched one. I think it is hinted at by the patternless that pops out of those blotched ones. I do think the entire natural population are all intergrades, that is what they are. I think the idea behind the “Means” is that the patternless is something else. I believe they are only a trace of what was there before the intergrade replaced it, which is still continuing. I believe once the “Blotched” is bred out of it, and it breeds true, we will see the original form that, again, I think is basically extinct. Until it is refined to breed consistently patternless, I consider the patternless intergrades too. I don’t believe there is a wild population of true breeding patternless kingsnakes. I just think there use to be, and we can save it. I have always called them patternless Goini, but I am coming around on the Means name for the patternless form. This is my “thing” in the hobby, the mystery of the patternless kingsnake.

well, while you're on your way to get ghost x goini you might also end up with hypo x goini and axanthic x goini... that should keep you busy?!?
