not hiding?

ritchie902 Dec 04, 2006 10:21 AM

Hi, i'm a first time leopard owner and i'm just curious if i should be concerned about my gecko not hiding? I got him/her yesterday and it is in a 10 gallon terrarium with a red bulb on it. temperture around 30 degrees C. a water dish and a hide spot identical to that which it had before. It ate crickets yesterday and appears to be sleeping on the warm side of the tank, today. It hasn't gone into it's hide spot at all (at least that i saw, maybe when i was sleeping). It was however housed with other geckos before with a normal flourescent bulb at the pet store. If anyone can tell me if this is normal or abnormal behvior, it would be appreciated

It shouldn't be a problem, most geckos seem to have their own personalities. As for my gecko, he stays inside his hide ALL day long. He's awake, but he sure likes to stare!

move the hide box to the warm end and see what he does. if it hides then it's a temp issue. what temp is the warm end and what temp is the cool end?

It appears that you are doing a good job setting up the environment for this gecko. It is important for them to have a 'cooler' side and a 'warmer' side.

Why is your gecko not hiding? Well, it could be that it is just getting acclimated to its new home. This may take as much as a week or so. Not to worry. You've made it past the difficult part and that is being patient waiting for the gecko to eat. Eventually, it will feel more comfortable with its surroundings and find a place to hide that's out of the way.

Secondly, many keepers actually have two hides in their enclosures- One on the warm side and one on the cool. That way their gecko doesn't have to choose which one but can let its body dictate which hide to go to.

Good luck.
