Copperhead Research

SnakesAndStuff Dec 04, 2006 10:27 AM

Here is a news story that KY3 out of Springfield, MO. They came out and visited me at my study site and were nice enough to walk around and talk with us as we searched for copperheads.

Its refreshing to see accurate and informative reporting. Kudos on getting the reporter to hook the copperhead!

Believe it or not that was the reporter's idea. She asked if she could hold one on a hook and I said sure and was just off camera to make sure things were safe. I had a bucket full of copperheads so I took one that had been captured and worked over a few times and was rather laid back.

They even walked around with us looking for the snakes. They drove down from Springfield, MO to our study site in north central Arkansas and talked with us about what we were doing and got some daytime filming done then followed us around from 9-10PM before they headed back home. Definitely one of the more positive media experiences we've had involving snakes. In fact, a lot of the news agencies that have covered the story have done pretty good and haven't sensationalized it.

Nice job! That was a very well done segment. Having done a number of them myself you always wonder what spin they are going to put on the story (and its always after the fact). They didn't sensationalize it too much and it held a positive tone towards the snakes despite the concerns that residents may have. Personally, that must be quite a neat site to monitor.
