I GOT MY FIRST TEGU!!

evan May 20, 2003 07:06 PM

I work at a lps. Today we recieved a shipment...and in it was a tegu. I had been reading everything I could find on them. My boss had ordered one and decided not to tell me about it until it came in. When I opened the box, there in a plastic container, was a nice looking 13 inch or so columbian black and white tegu. Now i know that they are suppose to be the mean ones of the tegu family....but he is so calm and mellow right now. I have got him out on several ocasions today...and he has not tried to bite, tail whip, hiss, or run from me yet. he has already ate about 2 dozed crickets and some kiwi. I love him!!

Congrats Evan!!! Welcome to the tegu addiction!!! LOL
Wow, that does sound rare for a baby columbian's temperament and also eating fruit! Columbians typcially do not eat fruit, even as adults.

Do you have a pic?

Take care!

i can get a pic...but i dont know how to post them on here. i offered him some can dog food about ten minuets ago...and he gulfed it down in no time. he has ate alot today. i dont know what he was fed at the distributors...but he is loving everything that i have offered him. if i can figure out how to post a pic i will. for right now i have him in a 20 long. do you think this is ok for now. i want to get a little bit of weight on him..so i think that it will do. i have a large water bowl, two pothos plants...that he loves, a half log cave, and a basking rock. i have a 5.0 bulb and a 100 watt heat lamp. the basking spot is at 107 and the cool side is at 85. i think that this is right isnt it?

thanx alot

Sounds like you are of and running to a great start! I say don't listen to those people who say that colombians are horrible! Blake's a colombian and he's terrific. However, he didn't start off even half as mellow as your guy. As long as you spend time with him and keep him healthy, I think that colombians are just as good as argentines! But I'm definitely biased.

Way to go with getting him off to a good start with the kiwi. I have to blend fruits and vegetables in with eggs and supplements in order to get Blake to eat them.
