Fruit Flies

sned25271 Dec 04, 2006 05:45 PM

I am expecting about 32 baby veileds to hatch in a couple months and I want to have fruit fly cultures ready. I haven't done fruit fly cultures before.

First of all, which species? D. melanogaster or D. hydeii?

How many cultures do I need to support 32 baby veileds?

Any recommendations on where to buy the cultures?

Thanks

buy the cultures at chameleonsonly.com...i'd get about 20-25 (a guess)cultures of them for 32 chams..my cham. just finished his culture 3 months later after i got him from them..the cultures are care free, they already have everything you need in them..the culture keeps breeding more and can produce over 1000,they just keep hatching in there..soo id get the cultures from them..

I culture both. The smaller ones for the new-born chams, and then the larger ones once they reach a couple weeks old. They'll eat both sizes from hatching, I just prefer to start with the smaller ones. The smaller ones also breed faster. I got my original cultures from canadianfeeders.com (I live in Canada). They arrived swarming with flies and maggots. For mine, fruit Flies remain a staple food up until the third month, when I start tappering down (but still offer them right until they stop accepting them, which is not until at least month 6). I use three different types of culture medium, hoping that this varies the nutritional value the flies offer my babies.
