Gerbils seem to take forever! They don't mature for months and then seem less productive in groups than if you keep a single pair. Every litter I have had they knock down to 3 to 6 babies immediately and it must be my group breeding as it is every litter in three different groups. A couple of mine consistently gave me half dozen litters. Then those wore out and I have duds right now. (can you tell I am a little frustrated with them?) I personally only have them for a couple of BPs that are going to spend the summer learning to eat scented rats!
Last week I went through and froze off all but one, lately productive, group of 1.3 and I am gonna find a pair to restart with.
For generally picky eaters I find Russian Dwarf Hamsters do much better....reproduce well in groups like mice and you will have little chance of falling in love with them.......most of mine are mean little cusses! That said the boys are laid back and cool. But the girls let you know the second they are pregnant....one, they will chase you around the cage. Two, they will chase each other and SCREAM! the whole time. I can tell when I have new pinks because of the screaming. Give me rats any day.
