Strange feeding question

brianray Dec 04, 2006 11:44 PM

My albino, Perrie, is about 3 months old and 125 grams. She was eating normally for about 2 months but hasn't eaten for the past 2 weeks after she ate a medium sized mouse, about 20 grams.

Tonight I got her a smaller fuzzy mouse, about 10 grams. I held the mouse by the tail and she looked ready to take it, but then she looked up, bit my finger and starting constricting my finger! Anyone heard of this? And when should I be worried about her eating? I am monitoring her weight, temps, humidity and am getting an appointment for the vet tomorrow.

Thanks for your help!
Brian

Brian, No need for vet appt., Balls will stop feeding from time to time. The fact that she bit your finger with a rodent means she was probably going to eat...your finger was probably moving more than the rodent. They smell the rodent then go for whatever moves. Get some long tweezers or tongs...saves the bite and also makes the snake more comfortable because your hand is not in her face.

She was hungry and wanted to eat but she was seeing the heat from your finger and it was probably hotter then the mouse. If it was a live mouse, you should just drop it in the tank/tub with her. She'll go after it on her own. If it was dead, you should warm it up and dangle it using long tweezers or tongs. Never feed right out of your hand unless you like to be bitten and want to scare the snake out of feeding. I suggest that you offer her a mouse every 4 to 5 days. I wouldn't worry about her unless she doesn't eat for a month or more and is losing weight. At her size she probably won't go off feed for quite a while. As long as she is given properly sized food in the proper manner and her habitat is comfortable for her. She looks very nice. Good luck with her.
