Question about Dumeril's Boas

koyote Dec 06, 2006 03:13 AM

I am adopting a healthy Dumeril's Boa, I have a lot of snake experience but these terrestrial boas are new to me. I was wondering what type of substrate is best when taking into consideration their higher humidity needs? I don't like or use bark or dirt substrates with snakes, but I would like a mistable, burrowable terrain for him.

Thanks for your input, here are a few picts of my new baby...

What higher humidity needs?
Dumeril's live in the dryer areas of Madagascar (even semi-desert areas.)
The Madagascan ground boas live in the humid tropical areas.

I use Aspen beeding. It allows them to burrow, doesn't swell when it gets wet, and it doesn't chew the snakes nose up. Some people say to use Orchid bark, but that does chew up there nose, and it doesn't allow for easy burrowing. While easier to clean, I prefer the Aspen. The other thing is, you can use newspaper, they can still cover themselves with that, though you lose the naturalistic look. Anyways, Aspen is the best. Here's some pictures of mine.
