OK....I AM ABOUT TO GIVE UP!!!

z3speed4me Dec 06, 2006 09:46 AM

hey everyone its me again....

ive had my baby for almost 2 months now without a feed

ive tried practically anything and everything, i got it to strike last night at thawed, bc a live mouse walking around the bottom it doesnt even pay attention to, but after the strike it immediately let go and curled up in defense hiding its head under the coils

it still hasnt shed either, i figured even though its not eating it would still possibly shed and i would try to feed again after shed but i dont know anymore

ive had him/her since october and i am scared its going to die or something from just NOT eating anything

seriously what is my next step if i personally cant get the little thing to take a meal, bc i really have no clue and i dont wanna lost my little baby!!!

First off, some questions:
Where did you get it. If it's from a breeder, can they help you? If it's not, is it an import? Might have a parasite load.
Next, what are you housing it in? If the enclosure is too large, it will sometimes make them feel too insecure to eat.
When are you feeding? Try different times. Morning, early morning, night, just before dark etc.
Make sure your temps are good and the humidity is high enough.
How old is this animal and was it feeding before you got it?
Lastly, there's been some excellent success getting non-feeders to eat using a raw strip of chicken. Kim Heller and some others have used it with great success after someone on the forum posted about trying it. You might try that to get the baby started. You can also try washing the fuzzy well in Ivory soap, rinsing well then drying it. This sometimes helps get the scent off of it. Try scenting with the chicken if it ends up eating the chicken. I don't remember if you listed scenting with lizard or not but if not try that as well.

Here's what I suggest:
First off, the suggestions posted by Meg are all good and I would re-read them and then re-read them again. There might also be some others chiming in if you'd be so kind to address the questions and let us know of some of your conditions.

So, without knowing any answers to Meg's questions, what I recommend is that "YOU" calm down. Believe it or not, you might be part of the problem. Baby gtps are extremely sensitive animals and they take their cues from their surroundings and you are that--a part of their surroundings. Also, they have never eaten a pink mouse before in their lives so "YOU" must be their teacher and an anxious teacher has never been a good teacher whether teaching Algebra 1, or teaching neonate chondros the ropes on eating. Next, I'd hold off feeding your little one entirely for 3 to 5 days, and stop messing with him/her--give it some space. The only exception being to spray and mist it (daily if the conditions suggest). I'll continue once we hear more from you, but this is where I'd begin.

I went down to your post/thread dated Oct. 27 and double checked what you had already been told. Have you gotten your baby out of that glass aquarium yet?

Whether it was captive bred or an import farmed baby, I can almost guarantee you it was not raised in a container that it felt so exposed to the world.

You never did answer whether or not you had a fecal check run on this baby, it looks like a typical farmed biak import.

no its been in a little tupperware like on finegtp's.com for at least 3 weeks, and i havent even bothered it for about 2 weeks until yesterday to try and feed which was when it was biting but letting go

but NOW i woke up this morning, it is sitting on the bottom of the tank not on a little branch and barely moving even when i touch it, i think its like dying bc it has no life in it, like it kinda just feels like i can nudge it and it has no strength

i need to do something like NOW i think its seriously about to die on me, i feel really bad right now like i'm a bad owner!!!

I don't mean to be rude here, but I am going to be…
As Dr. Culver pointed out you have been asked several questions and STILL have not answered them... Do you want help or sympathy???

If your not going to take the time to answer our questions then how are we supposed to help you... Your Chondro probably will die at this point and I think it you will take the time to reread every post you have made here you will see that you are the one to blame... If you want help you have to help us understand the situation... How else do you expect us to tell you a few suggestions...

I even gave you my work number twice in an attempt to help you and still, you remain firm in not taking initiative...

Maybe next time you should do a little research and ask a few questions before jumping in headfirst…

brought it to a local vet that is very good with reptiles, he is holding onto it for a few days, he said he can def bring it back

he believes the dealer bs'd me and that it is wild and not captive although it doesnt have any diseases, the problem this morning was from malnurishment and it just hasnt eaten so its body is giving up

he gave it a shot of some sugar and something else and it livened up in like a half hour

he said hell force feed it tonight and then again in like 3 days

snake should be good in about 2 weeks and hell let me know whats going on with it

as far as why it wasnt eating hes not sure but he said whoever sold it not to buy from them again as they definately didnt feed it even near the 6-7 times they claimed, he feels its only had about 3 meals

sooooo hes gonna bring my lil fella back i hope, and well see where it goes from there

either way, if i buy another one, its going to be and older and well grounded snake that i KNOW is ok to take in, and if a younger one, straight from one of you guys that purely breed gtp's either way i konw what NOT to do again and i think everything will be ok

Good to hear you got it to a vet. Who did you get it from anyway? Sorry you had a bad experience with your new baby.

We had a time figuring out how to feed our baby GTP as well. We would put a mouse right below it for a whole night and it wouldn't eat it. It went 6 weeks without eating before we figured out that we have to make it mad for it to eat. Check out some of our video's in the link below. I hope it helps you in the future.
