Belly burns

rickc Dec 06, 2006 10:29 AM

Could someone tell me what I can use for a burned belly on a Red Tail. My girlfriend put an UTH on her aquarium and didn't use a liner. Her Red Tail burrowed under the subtrate and layed on the glass right over the heater and now has a burned stomach. I've since put a liner in it for her but what can I use to treat the snakes belly? I was thinking of using Neosporin, would that work?

You need a thermostat or at least a rheostat to control the heat output on that UTH. You cannot let them run at capacity or you will have a burned snake again at some time in the future.

silver sulfadiazine, do not break any blisters. If there is any flesh exposed wash it with a nonirritating antibacterial soap (chlorhexidine) and get him to a vet. He needs to get started on antibiotics (ceftazidime). If it's just 1st degree burns home treatment is okay. Keep the site clean. If you don't have silver sulfadiazine, use a topical burn cream.

Thank you I did put a thermostat on it for her. They look like 1st degree burns not too bad thank goodness, but my girlfriend feels so bad she was crying. Thanks for the info.
