EAST BAY BUSINESS TIMES (Washington, DC) 04 December 06 Neurobiological Technologies opens snake center in Germany
Neurobiological Technologies Inc. has completed building a snake center in Germany to help produce Viprinex, a stroke-treatment drug derived from the venom of Malayan pit vipers.
The center in Moorrege, Germany, near Hamburg, currently holds 100 snakes, but has room for 1,500. The snakes are milked once a month for venom, which has anticoagulant properties and the ability to break up blood clots associated with stroke.
Each snake is housed its own room, kept at 79 percent humidity and at 82 degrees Fahrenheit to reflect a natural jungle environment.
Nordmark Arzneimittel GmbH owns and operates the plant for Neurobiological Technologies.
Emeryville-based Neurobiological Technologies (NASDAQ: NTII) is currently testing Viprinex in two Phase III trials.
